Leadership Development Module

The Leadership Development Module (LDM) is a 2-week intensive course, offered twice per year, usually in June and in August. Each year one LDM is held in Winnipeg and one somewhere else in Canada. Check out the Dates and locations of the upcoming LDM's.

having fun at LDMThe LDM can be taken as a stand-along course or as the introduction to the CCS Diploma Program or 1-year Certificate Program. (It is a prerequisite for all other CCS programs.)

The learning style is participatory and holistic - it melds heart, soul, mind and body. It honours experience, creativity, and group learning. This is no "sit in rows and listen to the teacher" education!

The LDM can also be taken for credit from the University of Winnipeg Faculty of Theology or from St. Stephen's College, Edmonton. (More information about cross-listing and joint degrees.)

“In two short, exhausting and exhilarating weeks I learned about inter-connection, commitment, perseverance, organization and faith...Living with everyone at the LDM these past 2 weeks has created one of the most profound, soulful and spirited moments of my life.  I am blessed.”

- Shelly Buffit, 2010

What do we learn?

The focus of the LDM is on how to be a faithful leader, particularly in a church context. Not a "everybody do what I say" kind of leader, but a leader who used her/his gifts to empower a community.

As a LDM group we draw on our own experiences and explore:

  • group dynamics
  • personality indicators
  • adult learning
  • learning styles
  • facilitation skills
  • conflict resolution

As an LDM faith community we share:

  • theological perspectives
  • biblical stories
  • personal journeys
  • daily worship
Students take part as co-learners and co-leaders designing and presenting:
  • reading discussions
  • workshops
  • worship
  • case studies
  • ministry reflections
  • peer assessments

“I truly enjoyed the course, grew from it, clarified issues and felt the network developed will be invaluable as the future unfolds...It was a joy to have the Adult Learning principles followed throughout the module – too often they are ignored!  I so appreciated the congruence between theory and practice.”

- Dan Moulton, LDM 2010

Who takes the LDM?

You mean, besides you? The LDM is great for:
  • people who feel called to ministry and want to train as a diaconal minister
  • lay people who want to serve their church/community better
  • ministers and priests who want to improve their skills and understanding through continuing education
  • designated lay ministers (DLM) or staff associates who want to fulfill part of their educational requirements
  • theological students

"The LDM was a welcoming experience, modeling inclusion in many ways.”

– Laurel Walton, LDM 2010
