Church Connections

Our Relationship to the Anglican Church of Canada

"I am honoured to be able to write on behalf of the Centre for Christian Studies. Much is spoken and written these days about the Church as the "whole people of God." But that view of the Church is talked of more than acted on. In order for it to become a reality, people at every level of church life need not only to have certain attitudes, but also to acquire certain skills.

The Centre for Christian Studies provides those skills in a way that no other institution in this country can. When I was a prairie bishop, I fantasized about what could be done if such a centre were on our doorstep. Persons who have access to its resources are truly blessed.

The Centre has deep roots in the Anglican and United church, but even more important, it is reaching out with branches and buds that have the potential to bring forth much fruit in the life of the Canadian church. My prayers and support go with the Centre in all its striving for the glory of God."

Anglican logoCCS is a recognized college of The Anglican Church of Canada and graduates have been employed at parish, diocesan and national levels as well as with ecumenical groups. General Synod has encouraged dioceses to develop canons for licensed lay workers which typically would include persons who had received CCS's diploma. Candidates intending lay ministry or the permanent diaconate should seek sponsorship from a diocesan bishop for education at CCS.

Our Relationship to the United Church of Canada

"I am very supportive of the Centre for Christian Studies and its approach to education.

Effective education is a matter of integration of experience. It requires putting ideas and theories into action, then reflecting on that action and allowing this reflection to inform further action. Education is fundamentally about how we live.

I admire the Centre for Christian Studies' approach to education which recognizes the importance of action-reflection and integration of lived experience. The Centre's program emphasizes ministries of service and education, using a community-based model which allows students the opportunity to practice these ministries.

I am excited by the shape the Centre is taking in Winnipeg, and across Canada."

United Church logoThe United Church of Canada recognizes CCS's diploma program as preparation for diaconal ministers and staff associates. Students who seek to be commissioned as diaconal ministers need to contact the Session or Board of their local church to begin the discernment process leading to candidacy. Graduates who are employed as lay persons are typically designated as staff associates, for whom there are employment standards. CCS's programs also provide training for those interested in non-professional ministry within and outside the Church.
